Duckworth was born in Thailand and grew up in several Southeast Asian countries where her father worked for the United Nations and several international companies. The family moved to Hawaii when she was 16. She attended the University of Hawaii and George Washington University. While working toward her Masters Degree at the latter institution, she joined the ROTC program. Commissioned after graduation, she was called up for active duty in Iraq.
