Hillary Rodham Clinton, a Democrat, represented the state of New York in the Senate from 2001-2009. (map) In June 2008, she ended her presidential campaign and endorsed her rival for the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama. On December 1, 2008, President Elect Obama announced his intention to appoint Clinton his Secretary of State. On January 21, 2009, the US Senate confirmed Clinton as Secretary of State for the Obama administration.
