Richard Stobbs is the Republican candidate in the 2008 congressional elections for the 6th Congressional District (map) of Ohio. Stobbs won the Republican nomination and will face incumbent Charlie Wilson)D-Ohio). [1]


Positions, record and controversies


Richard “Dick” Stobbs, Belmont County, has over 30 years of public service, including serving as sheriff of Belmont County 1981-85. He also has 11 years in federal service, including three years as a criminal justice specialist with the U.S. Department of Justice. Stobbs currently works in a local agency and is a lifetime certified law enforcement instructor in Ohio. Stobbs was a candidate for U.S. Representative for the 6th District of Ohio in 2006.[citation needed]

Stobbs was a volunteer firefighter and emergency squad member with the Colerain Volunteer Fire Company. He has a BBA degree from Ohio University, law enforcement associate degree from Jefferson Community College, and masters in administration from Central Michigan University. Stobbs is a graduate of the Colorado Outward Bound School and National Outdoor Leadership School.

Stobbs is a also U.S. Army Vietnam veteran, serving with the 11th Armored Cavalry (Blackhorse) Regiment; on the First Squadron Commander’s staff as an administrative clerk and machine gunner, and on the Regimental Commander’s staff as a combat correspondent. He received an honorable discharge and several awards and decorations, including: The National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal for Achievement, the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Most important, Stobbs is married to Jo Ann Stobbs, and they have four children and two granddaughters.

Stobbs won the Republican nomination in the 2008 congressional primary.[1]

Stobbs is a member of Martins Ferry Legion Post 38, life member of Bellaire Disabled Veterans Post 117, life member of Colerain VFW Post 8848, life member of The Blackhorse Association and life member of 11th Armored Cavalry Veterans of Vietnam and Cambodia.

Stobbs is also a life member of the NRA and has received their “A” rating. Stobbs is a life member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Assn., and a member of Lansing Sportsmen’s Club and Ohioans for Concealed Carry (OFCC). Stobbs has been endorsed by OFCC.

Stobbs has been active in numerous civic organizations over the years, including 4-H Junior Leaders, Jaycees, Rotary and Lansing Sportsmen’s Club; is currently active with the Belmont County Farm Bureau and served as Co-treasurer of the Law Enforcement Training Fund for the U. S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. Stobbs was recently honored as the Outstanding Alumnus of Jefferson Community College for 2008.

He is the Chairman for the Gold Star Family Committee of Ohio.[citation needed]
